Why do I need to do a bowel prep for a hysterectomy?

I thought that was very odd on the preparation for surgery instruction sheet. I’m not having bowel surgery, it will be a low bikini incision.
it’s a partial hysterectomy if that info is helpful, and bladder sling surgery.
I never heard of a request like this before. I didn’t have to do this when I had lapband surgery, major gall bladder surgery or my tubes tied. (The lapband surgery IS on your stomach also.)

The feces in the bowel change the geometry of the area and interfer with the surgery. The doctors have to be able to identify all of the nerves and tendons before cutting. A distended bowel can make it more difficult. The other answers are also correct too.

This is always a common procedure…your bowel area must be free of feces to cut down risk of serious infection…feces is filled with bacteria

Because it’s no fun for the doctor and nurses if the patient has a bowel movement during surgery. Not to mention how unsanitery that would be.
