Does rubbing your stomach help stimulate a bowel movement?

I was just wondering
I am a quad and my caregivers say it works. I am being serious not joking.

    sometimes ,yes . I work in spinal injury care , and sometimes when stimulation and manual evacuation of the bowels doesn`t work , then a massage of the abdomen helps . work with a clenched fist and massage from mc bernies point ( low right on patients side at point where small intestine meets large, where the appendix lives )
    and gently but firmly massage up towards the right breast ( but stop short as you feel ribs )
    then massage across just under diaphragm, then downwards towards left groin area.
    this action follows the natural large intestine;
    ascending ,transverse and descending colon
    failing this ,suppositaries or an enema may be needed
    check for medical history , such as diverticulitis or chrones disease.

    Suggest you google Nutrition recommendations for quadriplegics and paraplegics. Your care givers are correct, the massage starts Parastalisis, or smooth muscle contraction. You should join a support group for quad’s in your area, they can give you lots of tips.
