am i misinterpreting what a bowel movement should be?

You should have more fiber in your diet. Salads or extra fruits and vegetables will give your intestinal track enough bulk so that you will not need to force. Bowel movements should not have to be forced. Worse comes to worse, if you don’t like vegetables, you can take stuff like Benefiber - a powder or tablet that gives you fiber.
Bowel Movement is the body’s way of digesting the food you ate. It’s the movement of your intestines. Since you can feel the movement, it only means that the stool you’re about to excrete is still on the process for defecation. You have to defecate if and only when you feel an urge, because once you feel an urge your muscle specifically the rectum, will relax so that the stool will come out easily. Just take it easy. The more you force it, the more you’re prone to have hemorrhoids.
