How To Treat Hemorrhoids

I had about a week and a half of constipation in early June, and my descending colon has been a little swollen since then, enough to notice a bulge on my left side. Now my right side hurts a little bit and my stool is broken into small pieces when I pass it. I go frequently, but not in great quantity. Any ideas what this could be, before I head off to the doctor?
