Why do opiates seem to help my asthma?

I know that opiates are supposed to "supress breathing", but I seem to breath a lot better on them. I have fibromyalgia and take percocets for flare ups. When I’m not taking them, my asthma bothers me so much more. I’ve experienced this with all the opiates I’ve taken.

  • Dr. C says:

While large doses of opiates may suppress breathing, another effect is that they can relieve the sensation of breathlessness. However, opiates will not actually reverse the underlying pulmonary problem - only mask the symptoms. You should discuss with your doctor your asthma symptoms. He/she may recommend more appropriate medications or dosing schedule.
